Psalms 34:8

O taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man that trusteth in Him!

In my short period of time on this earth, I have discovered that life is a learning curve! We as humans learn much through experience, whether or not the experience is good or bad. More specifically we learn through our senses: what we hear, see, touch, taste, and smell. It’s through these senses we discern right from wrong or what we like or dislike; hence, the reason you may not: listen to Avant-Garde music, watch soap-operas, touch hot stoves, eat Vegemite sandwiches, or smell something burning. Through your own experiences you know what to avoid and what to pursue simply by the knowledge you’ve gained through your senses.

The picture on the right is a picture of a Spanish cookie called ‘Alfajore’. I was blessed to have had the opportunity to eat one of these wonderful cookies several years ago. The experience was nothing short of divine. The heavens opened, the sun shone through, heavenly music filled my ears…. So on and so on…. The experience was so great that I want you to now taste it! I’ll describe what it tastes like. It’s like having two scotch-fingers with caramel and coconut, with a hint of egg and lemon rind. Do you taste it now? If that didn’t help maybe the recipe may help you: 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, 2 egg yolks, 1 tsp. vanilla, 2 tsp. lemon rind, grated, 1 1/2 cup cornstarch, 1/2 cup flour, 1 tsp. baking powder, and 1/4 tsp. salt. Surely you can taste it now?

The point is clear. No matter how I may explain it, describe it, prescribe it, you can never enjoy the full experience. Unless you, for yourself, take the cookie and place it in your mouth. It is only then can you really experience the explosion of taste.

Isn’t this true with God!? I found that many times preachers and pastors, missionaries and evangelists, little old ladies and wise old men talk about the goodness of God in their life. And no matter how they described and obtained it, it was nothing like experiencing the goodness of God for myself. We can sit and listen to the forgiveness of God all day and never really know what it is like to be forgiven. We can hear of His graciousness, His mercy, his goodness etc. but never come to an experiential knowledge of Him for ourselves.

The truth that struck me most was the fact that “God is good”. In the end it doesn’t matter what others may say or may not say about God, the truth is, He is good!!!! The benefit is not for God but for us. If I don’t taste it, He is good! If I don’t see it, He is good! If I don’t believe it, He is good! If I reject it, He is good! Even if I taste it, see it, believe it, and even accept it, He is still good!!!!!!!! His goodness is not depended on our belief, but rather on His nature. So are you experiencing it???

Which brings me to my conclusion; do we as Christians have a day to day experience of the goodness of God? Have we come to the realisation and are resting in the fact that He is good, regardless of circumstance, or what we may feel for the day? This truth can be applied to any of His amazing attributes. My friend are you tasting and seeing that God is good!?
